Gym is your free mental lab!


What would you say mental toughness is if I asked you to define it? Some common responses might include:


  1. Not wanting to experience sadness, upset, or anger. Avoiding crying.

  2. Having the strength to face any challenge.

  3. Resisting cravings.

  4. Persevering even when facing adversity.

This list would resemble the examples given above.


Most of the above are right. Mental toughness is all about building qualities that help your mind across situations that are not favourable e.g Perseverance, Discipline. Emotional regulation and Focus.


Mental toughness is the ability to maintain focus, determination, and resilience in the face of challenges, stress, and adversity. It involves a combination of traits such as perseverance, confidence, emotional regulation, and adaptability, enabling individuals to consistently perform at their best, overcome obstacles, and remain committed to their goals despite setbacks and difficulties. Mental toughness encompasses both cognitive and emotional components, allowing a person to stay motivated, handle pressure, and approach situations with a positive and proactive mindset.


Here are things you can do for guaranteed mental toughness.


  1. Do hard things


By staying in the comfort of your bed, couch, or chair every day without challenging yourself, you will be unprepared to deal with difficult situations when they arise. I have seen individuals who believed they were immune to facing challenges like cancer or heart issues later in life. Do not let that happen to you.


Must these challenges be physical? Keep in mind that your mind and body are interconnected. I'm not suggesting that an entrepreneur building a business isn't facing difficulties. What I'm saying is that subjecting your body to significant discomfort will ultimately impact the mindset of the entrepreneur.



2. Find yourself


Instead of spending hideous amount of time, thinking about others and their lives. Try to find yourself.

What are your values?

What triggers you?

What excites you?

What makes you happy?

What makes you sad?

Are their things that make you feel jealous? Maybe these are things you aspire to have?

Consume content via books, podcasts or just the internet. We live in an age where you can read via so many channels that there is really no excuse to not chasing wisdom.



3.Stop wasting time


As you are constantly approaching death with each passing second, why waste time on trivial matters? Time is your most valuable asset. If I requested $1000 from you, would you give it without hesitation? Why then, would you freely give away your time?


Individuals who squander time often lack direction on how to utilize it effectively. In such instances, they should prioritize self-discovery.


“You are living as if destined to live forever; your own frailty never occurs to you; you don’t notice how much time has already passed, but squander it as though you had a full and overflowing supply — though all the while that very day which you are devoting to somebody or something may be your last. You act like mortals in all that you fear, and like immortals in all that you desire…

How late it is to begin really to live just when life must end! How stupid to forget our mortality, and put off sensible plans to our fiftieth and sixtieth years, aiming to begin life from a point at which few have arrived!”



Instead of wasting time on fears, worries, the past, or what you have lost, focus on the present moment. The only thing you have control over is today.


I make it a habit to journal daily and remain focused on the present. This practice has been incredibly beneficial for me.


Lastly, remember that sleeping is not a waste of time. Prioritizing rest and recovery is crucial for your body. Sacrificing sleep doesn't make you a hero, it just makes you foolish!


4. Do your job


Discover your calling - a role where you can utilize a talent to assist others in the community. Many individuals find this challenging. There is a common belief that our work must be closely tied to our passions in order for us to find happiness. While this can be true, it is not the only way. Each of us possesses a natural skill, whether it be creating motivational videos, writing blogs, excelling as a manager or coach, being an athlete, or a musician. Whatever your calling may be, dedicate yourself to it. Strive to perform at your best every day, and repeat. This is the essence of life.


Don't sweat the small stuff; instead, concentrate on pursuing endeavors that resonate with your principles. In the end life is a sequence of random events.


The truth is "you will get what is meant for you!"



5. Surround yourself with positive people and set boundaries


I strongly believe that individuals who are mentally resilient are at ease with being alone, yet they are selective about the company they keep. The thoughts that occupy your mind can be influenced by the information you absorb or the individuals you interact with. It is entirely up to you to regulate your social circle and the conversations you engage in. Establish boundaries and assert yourself. There have been numerous occasions in my life when I remained silent and overlooked situations, causing inner turmoil and affecting my happiness. It is not worth it. Learn to create boundaries.


I believe that positive environment and people around you can amplify your ability to achieve great things.


Mental strength is not about avoiding challenges, as they are inevitable. Rather, it is about your capacity to endure, recover, and thrive. Elon Musk achieved his success by having unwavering confidence in his ability to start anew. This led him to invest all his earnings from Paypal into Tesla and SpaceX. Developing mental toughness opens the door to incredible opportunities.
